Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life will be hosting the annual “Jewbilee Cultural Days” in order to help the community understand and learn more about the religion than what is taught in history text books. “For a lot of people, Jews are just people that you read about in World War II books and the Holocaust or you hear Jewish jokes, but a lot of students do not have direct contact with culture,” Hillel treasurer Jeremy Joseph said. “It is not just a religion but it’s a whole culture. We want students to come and check it out and have fun exploring these types of traditions.” Hillel adviser Wendy Berilson also encourages people to attend the events, saying that she hopes “that it will give a chance for people to be exposed to the religion and culture.” The events began yesterday with traditional Israeli folk dancing performed by professor Meirav David in the Skylight Lounge in the Wyoming Union. Today Hillel will be hosting a free kosher lunch catered from the East Side Kosher Deli located in Denver from 12:30-2 p.m. in the Dean’s Conference Room of the Agricultural Building. “They do all sorts of typical Israeli authentic deli items such as pastrami,” Joseph said. On Thursday, Anne Lane will present Jewish books in the Toppan Rare Books Library in the American Heritage Center from 3-4 p.m. Berilson said that students “get to learn about the uniqueness of the culture with the presentation of Jewish books.” The week will end Friday with the movie screening of “Valkyrie,” which will play at 6:30 p.m., 9 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. According to Joseph, there are over 100 Jewish students, 70 Jewish faculty members and 50 Jewish families in Laramie. “You wouldn’t necessarily know that someone you know is Jewish, but it is important to know,” Joseph said. Hillel was created in 1923 and is the world’s largest Jewish campus organization. All events are free and open to the public.
