The pop singer and actress will play the groundbreaking role of Peruvian American mountaineer Silvia Vasquez-Lavado in a forthcoming biopic written and directed by Elgin James (“Lowriders”) and produced by Oscar winner Donna Gigliotti (“Hidden Figures”). This movie is based on Silvia’s upcoming memoir, “In The Shadow Of The Mountain”, which is planned to be published in 2022. The ongoing project, which both Gomez and Vasquez-Lavado has shared on social media platforms, is already being reposted and looked at as Oscar material. On Wednesday, Silvia wrote on Instagram that she was so sublimed, grateful and thrilled to be sharing this amazing news, that was a work-in-progress for the last 10 months, ans had called Gomez “bold, talented and brilliant.”
Fans Not Impressed With Gomez Playing A Lesbian Role
Though most fans and followers were happy to know her role, most fans had mixed emotions over the fact that the actress will play a lesbian pioneer. Vasquez-Lavado was the first out gay woman to naturally complete the Seven Summits, and by climbing the highest peaks on each of the seven continents. She acquired the title in June 2018. Many Twitter users wrote saying that they wished the directors would’ve given LGBTQ roles to LGBTQ actors/actresses, rather than to straight ones. Fans also pointed out that Silvia herself will be present to assist the executive producer on the film, which also hints at her approval of the casting decision. She said that she was “honoured and touched” when the “Rare” singer was willing to take up the starring role. Representatives for Gomez did not respond to the Times’ request for a comment, and are willing to keep it that way.
